Hot Stone Massage in Tysons / Vienna, VA
A $20 warmth enhancement layered into the base massage of your choice — Swedish, Deep Tissue, or the TAO Signature Combo. Especially good November through March.
Quick Answer
Hot stone massage is a warmth enhancement rather than a standalone style: smooth basalt stones are warmed and worked into the body alongside the massage you already booked. At TAO in Vienna VA it is a $20 add-on to any service — so a 60 minute Swedish session is $100 plus $20 — and it is already included in both couples rituals. Open every day, 10 am to 9 pm.
Deep Warmth
Hot Stone Massage in Vienna
A note up front, because most spa websites bury it: hot stone at TAO is an enhancement, not a separate style. You book the base massage you want — Swedish, Deep Tissue, the TAO Signature Combo, or Sports — and we layer in warmed basalt stones for an extra $20. The pricing below shows the combined cost so you can plan with no surprises.
What hot stone actually does: it softens tight tissue from the outside in. Warm muscle is more pliable, which means the therapist can reach a deeper layer without leaning in harder. The downstream effect is that the work feels easier even when it is going deeper — particularly in the upper back, shoulders, and lower back, where most of us carry the residue of long Tysons workdays.
It is our most-requested add-on November through March, and for couples we already build it into the TAO Special Couple Massage ($200 / 60 minutes). One quick caveat — hot stone is not for everyone. Pregnancy (especially first trimester), circulation issues, and a few other conditions make it a poor fit. See the FAQ below for the full list, and we will happily steer you toward a Swedish or Foot Reflexology session instead.

Combined Pricing — Base Massage Plus the Warmth Upgrade
The upgrade is $20 on top of whichever service you book, and it adds about 5 minutes to the setup rather than taking minutes away from the massage. Below are the 5 most-booked combinations, with the base price and the upgrade shown separately so nothing is hidden.
| Combination | Duration | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swedish + warmth upgrade | 60 minutes + 5 mins | $100 + $20 | First-timers; pure relaxation on a cold day |
| Deep tissue + warmth upgrade | 60 minutes + 5 mins | $100 + $20 | Chronic knots; heat makes firm pressure easier |
| TAO Signature Combo + warmth upgrade | 90 minutes + 5 mins | $180 + $20 | The most-booked winter pairing on our menu |
| Sports recovery + warmth upgrade | 60 minutes + 5 mins | $120 + $20 | Training through the cold months |
| TAO Special Couple Massage | 60 minutes | $200 | Warm stones and a face mask already included |
Why Hot Stone
What Hot Stone Adds to a Session
An Enhancement, Not a Replacement
Hot stone at TAO is layered into the massage you would already book — not a separate style. The base service does the therapeutic work; the stones change what that work feels like. You keep the technique, you add the warmth.
Lets the Therapist Work Deeper, With Less Pressure
Warm muscle is pliable muscle. When the basalt stones pre-warm the back and shoulders, your therapist can reach a deeper layer of tissue without leaning in harder — which is why pairing hot stone with our Deep Tissue Massage produces results that firm pressure alone cannot.
The Best Pairing for a Vienna Winter
January in Northern Virginia. The kind of cold that lives in your shoulders the entire drive in from Falls Church. Twenty minutes into a hot stone session, the holding pattern under your shoulder blades just lets go. There is a reason this is our most-booked add-on November through March.
Calms the Nervous System Quickly
Warmth signals safety. The body downshifts out of fight-or-flight noticeably faster when warm stones are part of the session — useful if you have been wound tight by a long week of meetings at the Tysons offices or a hard travel stretch through Dulles.
Improves Circulation Where Heat Lands
Capillaries dilate under heat. Blood flow increases through the area the stones are working — back, shoulders, lower back, feet — which helps fatigued tissue clear and recover.
A Sensory Ritual Worth the $20
Even on a healthy day, hot stone is one of those small enhancements that turns a good massage into a memorable one. Twenty dollars, five extra minutes, and the entire feel of the room shifts.

How the Warmth Upgrade Fits Into Your Session
Adding stones does not change the massage you booked; it changes how the first 20 minutes of it feel. Here is where the warmth enters the session, how your therapist checks the temperature, and what happens at the end of the hour.
- 01
Mention it at booking or at check-in
The upgrade is $20 and takes 5 minutes to prepare, so tell us when you book or when you arrive. Cold stones are available instead, and are the better choice for inflammation or a summer afternoon.
- 02
The therapist tests every stone first
Each stone is checked against the therapist's own forearm before it touches you. Nothing goes onto skin that has not been tested, and you are asked at the first placement whether the temperature is comfortable.
- 03
Placement along the back, then working stones
Stones rest along either side of the spine and across the shoulders while the therapist works elsewhere, warming the tissue for 5 to 10 minutes. Then smaller stones are used in the hand as an extension of the therapist's palm.
- 04
Deeper work, less force
Warm tissue yields sooner, so the therapist can reach a deeper layer without leaning in harder. This is the entire point of the upgrade — and why it pairs so well with firm-pressure work in January.
- 05
Feet and hands to close
Small stones in the palms and under the feet during the final 5 minutes. Drink water afterwards. Most regulars keep the upgrade on every booking from late October through March, then drop it for the summer.

Everything Worth Knowing Before You Add the Stones
This is the most-asked-about item on our add-on list, and also the most misunderstood — people arrive expecting a separate 60 minute treatment. Below: what the warmth actually does, which base service to pair it with, who should skip it, and what it costs.
Why heat lets a therapist work deeper
Warm muscle is more pliable than cold muscle. Raising surface tissue temperature before the deeper work begins means the therapist meets less resistance, so the same release can be achieved with noticeably less force. Practitioners typically warm smooth basalt stones to roughly 110 to 130 °F — warm enough to soften tissue, never hot enough to burn — and test each one on their own forearm first.
Basalt is used because it is volcanic, dense and non-porous, so it holds heat for the 15 to 20 minutes a placement needs. The general research picture on massage for tension and pain is summarised by NCCIH and Cleveland Clinic, both linked below.
Which base service to pair it with
With Swedish massage at $100 for 60 minutes the effect is pure sedation — the booking to make when you want to feel boneless for the evening. With deep tissue at the same $100 it is therapeutic: the warmth makes firm pressure tolerable exactly where you normally brace against it.
The most-booked winter combination is the TAO Signature Combo at $180 for 90 minutes with the upgrade added. For couples there is nothing to add — both the TAO Special Couple Massage at $200 and the Aroma Couple ritual at $220 include stones already.
Who should skip the warmth
We will steer you away from heated stones if you are pregnant, particularly in the first trimester; if you have circulation problems, uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes-related neuropathy; if you are within a few weeks of surgery; or if you are sunburned. Mention any of these when you book and we will suggest an alternative rather than improvise on the table.
Cold stones remain an option in several of those cases, and a foot reflexology session at $90 for 60 minutes or a reiki session is a comfortable substitute when heat is off the table.
Seasonality: why November to March is different
Demand for the upgrade roughly follows the thermometer. From November through March it is requested on the majority of bookings; between June and September it is closer to a novelty, and cold stones outsell warm ones on the hottest weeks.
There is a practical reason beyond comfort. People arrive in January already contracted — 15 minutes in a cold car with the shoulders up around the ears — and the first 10 minutes of any winter massage are spent undoing that. Stones do it faster.
What it costs, and stacking with other upgrades
The upgrade is $20 flat, at any session length. Other 5 minute enhancements: essential oil $20, body scrub $30, cupping $30, steam eye mask $12. They can be combined — the most common pairing is warm stones plus essential oil on a 90 minute booking.
If you add it on every visit, the monthly membership and the session packages are the cheaper way to buy the base massage: 5 sessions of 60 minutes for $450 works out at $90 an hour, and 10 sessions for $890 at $89.

Hot Stone Massage FAQs
Wait — hot stone is not a standalone service?
+
Correct, and we want to be upfront about that. Hot stone at TAO Therapeutic Massage Spa is offered as a $20, five-minute enhancement layered into any base massage — Swedish, Deep Tissue, the TAO Signature Combo, or Sports. The pricing on this page shows the combined cost (base massage + the hot stone add-on) so there are no surprises at checkout. Hot stone is also already included in our TAO Special Couple Massage and TAO Aroma Couple packages.
Should I pair hot stone with Swedish or Deep Tissue?
+
Different effect, both excellent. Swedish plus hot stone is pure, melting relaxation — what you book when you want to feel like you do not have a spine for the rest of the evening. Deep Tissue plus hot stone is more therapeutic — the warmth makes the deeper work tolerable in the spots where you normally tense up against the pressure. If you want both effects in one session, the TAO Signature Combo with hot stone is the call.
Who should NOT book hot stone?
+
We will steer you away from hot stone if you are pregnant (especially first trimester), if you have circulation issues, uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes-related neuropathy, recent surgery, or are sunburned. In those cases a standard Swedish, Deep Tissue, or Foot Reflexology session is the safer call. Mention any of these at booking and we will recommend the right alternative.
How hot are the stones, and where do they go?
+
The basalt stones are warmed in a temperature-controlled unit to a therapeutic range that feels notably warm but never burns. The therapist tests every stone against their own forearm before it touches you and adjusts placement to your comfort. Typical placements: along the spine, across the back of the shoulders, in the palms, and on the soles of the feet during the closing minutes of the session.
Can I stack hot stone with other add-ons?
+
Yes. Hot stone pairs well with essential oil aromatherapy ($20), body scrub ($30), and cupping ($30) — all five-minute enhancements. The most-booked combination at TAO is Deep Tissue + hot stone + essential oil. Mention what you want at check-in and your therapist will sequence everything so it flows.
How often should I add hot stone?
+
Most regulars at TAO add hot stone every session through the colder months — late October through March — and skip it in summer. If you carry chronic shoulder or lower-back tightness year-round, it is worth keeping in the rotation as a standing add-on. Our monthly memberships make that easier.
